What is emdr?

EMDR is a research proven intervention designed to facilitate healing from trauma, anxiety, depression, and many other types of issues. It has been shown to increase the effectiveness of therapy, theoretically shortening the duration and number of therapy sessions.

How does EMDR Work?

Eye movements activate certain areas of the brain to release past stuck emotion, thoughts, and memories.  Sometimes beliefs and memories get stuck in our brains like a loop or groove that keeps playing the same pattern over and over.  Stuck memories, emotions, and beliefs can get triggered and project themselves as how we feel and perceive current experiences, sometimes without our consciously even realizing this.

EMDR is a way of getting unpleasant or traumatic memories and beliefs unstuck from the brain, allowing fresh perspectives to form.  Feelings, thought patterns, and memories that once blocked the greater view of our lives can be shifted so that we can see the bigger picture, gaining more self-empowerment, emotional objectivity and spaciousness.  As perception grows and our personal power returns, more choices become naturally apparent in our everyday experiences, because the old loops or grooves related to negative stuck experiences of the past are no longer affecting the processing capacity of the brain.

Our experiences help shape who we are, and they are important to us.  They are part of our identity.  EMDR helps us to integrate our experiences in a meaningful way, so that the importance of our past experiences are still held sacred, and at the same time, we have a more holistic experience of our self in totality. We gain access to the beauty of the entire experience of being human.

EMDR has many facets. It can help with traumatic memories, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, shame, and fear. By finding within the brain experiences of feeling better, finding true positive beliefs about the self, clients can begin form stronger and better perceptions of themselves, creating the lasting capacity to deal not only with past memories and negative beliefs, but current stressors.
